American "Justice" is a product of the nurse mare foal (NMF) industry. Justice was 4 - 5 months old when he found me. I was at an overcrowded farm, where this little foal was following me everywhere. Several foals were purchased from this farm and they were all very sick and emaciated. All of the foals had their own serious, health issues. They all had pneumonia and an infestation of internal parasites, that needed to be treated with the advice of a veterinarian amongst other things.
Today all the foals are doing very well. They have grown and gained the weight they so much needed!
The nurse mare foal industry is a very ugly situation for most of the babies born into it. A nurse mare foal, is a foal that is born and its lactating mother is shipped off to nourish a more "expensive" foal of another mare. This mare either goes back to work, is re-bred immediately after delivery or died giving birth.
These foals are often Thoroughbred/Draft crosses, but they can be any breed or mixture of breeds.
A Thoroughbred mare’s purpose is to produce more racehorses. A mare can give birth to one foal each year as long as she is re-bred immediately after the birth. Because the Jockey Club requires that, the mare be bred by live cover only, the mare must travel to the stallion for breeding. She may be shipped as soon as 7-10 days after the birth, but a 3-4 week period is generally allowed. Since traveling is very risky for these newborn racing foals, and insurance costs are prohibitive for the foal to accompany the mother to the next stallion farm, the nurse mare is hired to raise the Thoroughbred foal. The nurse mare is not able to take her baby with her, so he is taken away. These foals may be very young when they are separated from their mothers, even days or weeks old. Therefore, she leaves her foal behind to care for the "expensive" foal.
Once the nurse mare’s job is complete, she too, is re-bred to give birth to yet another foal which she will be forced to abandon.

We urge you to find a rescue organization close to you and support it with your time, needed supplies, monetary donations, or adopt a rescued horse and benefit the rescue, the horse and your heart!
